After being reminded about the lasting effect of plastic over at Ottawa's No Plastic Project blog, I thought more carefully about my purchases the next time I went to the grocery store. I was thrilled to find this cidre: Filsinger's Organic in glass jars and that it was from Ayton, Ontario (more local if you are in Southern Ontario rather than Ottawa but still within the province!). Since I've gone back to get more, I started wondering if this farm would consider reusing bottles and I find out that they DO accept glass bottle returns in North York! So again good news for all of you in Toronto. I sent an email to see if they would consider expanding this program... I will report back when I hear from them.
For those of you in Ottawa, the closest locations you can purchase this cidre (and perhaps white and red grape juice, which they also make) are:
- Our Green Shelf in Merrickville
- The Granary in Carleton Place
Perhaps it's time to discuss with your local health food store the possibility of carrying this product or working with local Ottawa farmers to consider glass bottles and a return program!! Do tell me if there is local cidre in glass bottles in Ottawa - it would be good to know where you can get it!

p.s. love that Childfree is biking into work until Christmas - maybe you'd like to go and visit her and leave a couple of words of encouragement!

mmmm - this looks delicious. Was thinking it would be nice heated up and with a stick of cinnamon! Unfortunately, I haven't found any local cider in Ottawa :(
We're apple cider fans and tend to enjoy Hall's Apple Cider from Brockville (they have loads of apple products) which is carried by The Piggy Market. This is a great though as you're absolutely right about the glass jars - nice find!
Hi! I'm on the Xmas party planning committee at my workplace and I would like to bring some more eco-friendly alternatives to the table. Do you have any suggestions, especially alternatives to plastic glasses and cutlery that could be sourced locally? (I'm new to Ottawa)
Great idea - cider in glass - what a concept...if i had time i'd put the bug in Kardish's ear.
Thanks for stopping by and all the great comments!
: ) mmmm Jen - always great heated up!
DF - I definitely need to go to the Piggy Market!
Fiona - great question! Does your office have a kitchen where reusable cutlery/glasses could be stored? You could always see if there is any interest in buying some second hand items that could be reused every year?
I know a big thing for our office was starting "bring your own mug" parties. Perhaps the xmas party could be finger food only so that you wouldn't need any cutlery?
And if there are no other options - renting dishes/cutlery could be looked into.
This is a great goal to have - I definitely think your planning committee could brainstorm around this and come up with some great ideas! Good luck - tell us what you came up with!
CKY DG - It would be really great if this could be done locally and the glass bottles could be reused! Just like the Pop Shoppe - is that still around?
Guess what? Just went shopping at Metro in the Glebe here in Ottawa. Since I was getting delivery, I was trying buy the kind of stuff I usually can't carry on foot and checked out the juice section. And to my delight discovered that they are carrying this cider! I bought two bottles! Now if I could just return the empties, everything would be perfect! I'll write to them as well. So thanks for this post, because it might not have "jumped out at me" from the shelf if I hadn't read about it first here.
Oh- and I just have to add- I was so happy when I saw that the bottles are not only glass but also have a totally minimalist metal cap. No plastic anywhere in sight! I am so tired of even things that seem non-plastic having plastic parts - like the stupid plastic caps on milk and juice cartons, plastic lids on glass jars of mayonnaise, plastic "windows" in pasta boxes and paper mushroom bags, etc.!
Oh that's great!! Now I know where to buy it when I'm home from school! It's so true - any plastic is just not good. Did you see the Queen of Green's video on recycling?

She mentions that all the small bits need to be thrown away as they jam up the machines if you try to include them in the recycling stream.
